"We are pleased to host this event, but most importantly we appreciate the opportunity to promote dialogue about sustainability among our associates and members of the community," said James G. Carlson, Amerigroup chairman and chief executive officer. "Amerigroup is proud of our accomplishments in corporate social responsibility and sustainability. And we are always eager to talk about the positive business rationale for sustainability."
Today's Fair, a first of its kind for Amerigroup, featured exhibits from the City of Virginia Beach, a local "green" restaurant, home improvement stores, nonprofit organizations and more. Amerigroup has been an active leader in sustainability efforts and in corporate social responsibility. The Company was named "Overall Leader in Corporate Social Responsibility Practices" by PR News for 2010. Last year, Amerigroup received the prestigious Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Award from the Commonwealth of Virginia, and in 2008, the Company was named Good Corporate Neighbor by Virginia Business magazine and Volunteer Hampton Roads.
Amerigroup's efforts toward sustainability (overall) include:
- The elimination of foam cups companywide, netting $80,000 in annual savings and the prevention of 1.5 million polystyrene cups from entering the waste stream.
- A savings of more than 5 million sheets of paper a year with the duplex printing option on Company printers.
A look at efforts across the Company:
- Virginia Beach Headquarters: Converted to green cleaning and partnered with local Rideshare and telework programs. Additionally, Amerigroup saves more than 200,000 gallons of water annually, with the use of low-flow devices.
- Florida Health Plan: Increased recycling in all locations and implemented a Rideshare program.
- New Mexico Health Plan: Received a "Green Office" award from its building management company.
- New York Health Plan: Amerigroup is using a hybrid vehicle in the community.
- Throughout Amerigroup's Texas, Virginia and Maryland offices, alternative workplace strategies have been implemented to reconfigure the use of current workspace, ultimately to alleviate the need for additional space, by 15 percent.
As the Company enhances its sustainability efforts, plans are in place to increase recycling capabilities, continue to develop the most efficient use of workspace and expand the Rideshare initiative.
