"Individuals who focus on the duty at hand – not the award at the end – are the ones who are most deserving of recognition," said American Red Cross board member and Amerigroup Senior Vice President (SVP) of Investor Relations Julie Trudell. "Our Company is deeply committed to providing assistance to our neighbors in need and strives to demonstrate a spirit of giving in all situations."
Amerigroup encourages and supports community involvement through our philanthropic arm, the Amerigroup Foundation; through our associate fundraising efforts; and through our Community Volunteer Program. In 2011, the Amerigroup Foundation contributed more than $2.3 million nationally to organizations whose goals are aligned with the Company's mission to serve the financially disadvantaged, seniors and people with disabilities. The Foundation has contributed to the Red Cross every year for the past decade. Additionally, our employees raise funds for the Red Cross through the Annual Red Cross Heroes Campaign.
Over the past decade, the Amerigroup Foundation has contributed approximately $100,000 to the American Red Cross.
"We are so appreciative of the support that we receive from Amerigroup," said American Red Cross Coastal Virginia Region Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Cindy Jackson. "It is an honor to present this award to Amerigroup as a token of our appreciation."
Amerigroup also sponsors a Disaster Response Team as part of the Red Cross "Ready When the Time Comes" program. Our team has more than 100 members, and 55 of them are certified by the Red Cross in shelter work, shelter operations, first aid, bulk distribution, mass feeding and mass casualty. The team has responded to those in need in Tennessee after Hurricane Gustav, those in Houston after Hurricane Ike, those in Georgia after Tropical Storm Hanna, and more recently in Virginia Beach after a Navy jet crashed into an apartment complex.
