Amerigroup Foundation Honors Texas Sen. Robert Duncan as a 'Champion for Children'

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., April 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Amerigroup Foundation today honored Sen. Robert Duncan of Lubbock, Texas, with its "Champion for Children" award, which is part of a national program recognizing outstanding public advocacy efforts by government and community leaders who help improve the health and well-being of children across the nation.

Sen. Duncan has worked in support of those who create a healthy and safe environment for children suffering from abuse. To honor Sen. Duncan's commitment to these children and their families, the Amerigroup Foundation presented a contribution in the amount of $2,500 to the South Plains Children's Shelter. Since 1978, the shelter has provided assistance to victims of physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

"We support all people who advocate for the elimination of any kind of abuse against children," said John E. Littel, Chairman of the Amerigroup Foundation. "We commend Sen. Duncan for his efforts on their behalf. He offers a great example for all of us to follow, and we are hopeful that these and other efforts are successful in helping to make our communities a safer place for all children."

In the past 32 years, more than 3,000 victims have utilized the shelter's services. Most of the children remain for 14 days, but some have needed more extensive aid and have remained for up to 90 days. Sen. Duncan, who has been a long-time supporter of the shelter, said he was honored to receive the award.
