Amerigroup Expands Leadership Development Program
Growing Program Means More New Hires for Local Economy, Health Care Opportunities for Recent Graduates
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., May 25, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- At a time when many local students are challenged with the prospect of securing employment upon graduation, Amerigroup Corporation (NYSE: AGP) is expanding one of its new hire programs. Today, the Company announced the hiring of 10 recent college graduates to add to its innovative, new Leadership Development Program (LDP). Launched in 2009, the goal of the LDP is to attract, train and cultivate a diverse group of top talent and provide the tools they need to contribute to the Hampton Roads region and our nation's health care industry.
"Our Leadership Development Program represents a great way to bring individuals into our company at a time when they can not only build a career but make a real difference in the lives of our most vulnerable citizens," said James G. Carlson, Amerigroup chairman and chief executive officer.
The program helps recent graduates transition from the academic world to the growing field of health care. It puts them on a career track with two years of "rotational assignments" companywide, formal coursework and leadership training. The newly minted "Class of 2010," joins last year's first class – bringing the total number of LDP participants to 20.
"This important program is a mutually beneficial, worthwhile investment in the lives of some very talented individuals who bring the impressive, diverse backgrounds and fresh perspectives we, as a company, embrace," said Linda Whitley-Taylor, Amerigroup executive vice president of human resources.
Having recently celebrated its 15-year anniversary, Amerigroup was ranked No. 5 among Fortune magazine's "Most Admired" companies in the health insurance industry for 2010. As a publicly funded health care company serving 1.9 million members in 11 states, Amerigroup is a significant contributor to the Hampton Roads economy – ranked in the "Top 1 Percent" of all employers in the region – with an annual impact of $500 million on the local economy.
"Not only is it important that we commit to developing new talent, but it comes at an opportune time to help grow the economy and contribute to health care reform efforts overall," Carlson added.
