Americans Urged to Take Action Against Asbestos During National Asbestos Awareness Week
Join the Movement to Finally Ban Asbestos Now in the U.S.
WELLESLEY, Mass., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the United States Senate have declared April 1-7, 2010 as "National Asbestos Awareness Week," a time dedicated to raising the awareness of the dangers surrounding asbestos and its prevalence across America. Asbestos has been banned in some 50 countries but in the United States, it can be easily found in the ceilings and floors of buildings that were built before 1980, duct tape, caulking, textured paints, car brakes, automotive parts, and even children's toys. Each year, 2,000-3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer which is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.
During "National Asbestos Awareness Week," Americans can make a difference and draw greater national attention to the nation's asbestos problem by visiting www.BanAsbestosNow.com and joining the letter writing campaign to Congress. Additionally, visitors to the site can enter the Ban Asbestos Now video search by creating a 90-120 second video vignette that drives attention to the national asbestos problem and compels the audience to join the movement to "Ban Asbestos Now." Selected winners will have their video launched on the Ban Asbestos Now web site plus they'll win a trip to the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival and $1,000 cash per person for a team of up to 4.
