Americans See Technology as Solution for Government To Do More with Less, Red River Survey Finds
Citizens Cite Teleworking as a Worthy Investment
CLAREMONT, N.H., March 12, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As spending dominates the dialogue on Capitol Hill, Americans are nearly unanimous in the belief that the federal government needs to reduce its expenses, with the vast majority believing that technology is a catalyst for allowing government to do more with less, according to a new survey released by Red River, a leading federal information technology (IT) services provider.
The survey* found that cutting federal spending receives broad, bi-partisan support from 94 percent of Americans. Moreover, 63 percent believe technology can help government do more with less. More than 70 percent of Democrats see technology as a driver of government efficiency vs. 56 percent of Republicans.
"The government needs to ensure that its technology purchases are providing a significant return on investment. Our industry must deliver on the ultimate taxpayer promise: streamlining processes and automating tasks to save money and maximize service," said Jeff Sessions, Red River senior vice president of corporate strategy. "There are actions that the federal government can take today, which can deliver significant benefits and efficiencies. We see telework expansion as a prime example."
Enterprise mobility, also known as telework or telecommuting, has been a major focus of the federal government and the survey shows that Americans believe that it is worth the investment. Nearly 60 percent feel that teleworking will help reduce costs for the federal government with the majority of Americans believing that government workers can get as much accomplished teleworking as they do from their physical offices.
Additional survey findings include:
- 76% of Americans believe that government workers have access to the latest technologies
- However, 60% believe the private sector uses more of the latest technologies; only 19% believe the federal government does
- 57% feel that the government should use telecommuting as a benefit to recruit employees; only 23% said they should not.
*Red River commissioned Zogby Analytics to conduct a nationwide online survey of 1,011 adults in the US. from Jan. 31 through Feb. 1. Based on a confidence interval of 95 percent, the study's margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
