Americans Say Angelina Jolie Most Charitable Celeb, Kim Kardashian Least
Americans Felt Generous In 2014 With 63% Donating This Year, Many Say Better Finances A Factor
NEW YORK, Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Results from a nation-wide poll from WebThriftStore (www.webthriftstore.com), the first multi-platform marketplace for nonprofit thrift stores, revealed today that the state of American Giving in 2014 is on the rise. The poll included more than 1,000 Americans to gauge a wide sentiment of topics, including how they prefer to donate, what influences their choice of charity, how much they donate and more. In addition to overall giving, the poll also looked at pop culture influence on charitable giving and how or if that affects people's choices to donate.
The most notable overall results from the poll included that giving was up this year from last, as well as the following numbers regarding who gave and where their money went:
- 63% donated this year; of those, 92% also donated last year
- Health-related charities are most popular (39%), followed by other (such as religious group, veterans, homelessness, etc.) (22%) and animals (15%)
- Most prefer to donate in person (43%); second most popular is online (37%); third was by mail (16%)
- 17% didn't know what the money they donated was used for
- If they had extra money this holiday season, respondents would 1.) Save it, 2.) Donate to a charity, 3.) Buy someone else a gift
Regarding pop culture influence, the survey looked into how it does or does not affect charitable giving for most Americans. Interesting finds from those questions include:
- Celebrity ties to charities have more influence over American giving to particular charities than political figures do
- Angelina Jolie was cited as the "most charitable celebrity" by far with 44% of the votes; Taylor Swift came in second with 11% of the votes
- Kim Kardashian was perceived as the "least charitable celebrity" (1.2%) with Beyonce (3%) and Leonardo DiCaprio (6.5%) and Matthew McConaughey (6.8%) trailing closely behind
Other salient points from the poll that were discussed included that more than half of the people polled in 2014 said they did so because they were doing better financially and that the middle class was actually perceived as the most charitable demographic. Additional topics that were covered included the top reasons for giving or not giving, and how much Americans felt was the appropriate amount to donate.
