Americans for Fair Taxation® Speaks Out Against Campaign Misrepresentations of FairTax® Plan
Letter filed with FactCheck.org exposes intentional distortions and mistruths about FairTax; calls on watchdog organization to correct unethical campaign mistruths
HOUSTON, Sept. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Americans for Fair Taxation® (AFFT) is releasing today a copy of a letter sent to FactCheck.org, asking for an immediate correction of statements made by political campaigns that seek to intentionally distort and misrepresent their opposition's support for and the facts of the FairTax® Plan in order to gain a competitive advantage.
AFFT provided several examples of egregious ad tactics during the 2012 campaign cycle including the Christy Vilsak and Charles Boustany for Congress campaigns. Their online, television and mail ads grossly mislead voters by stating that their opponents support a 23% tax increase, yet fail to inform the electorate that under the FairTax Plan, all income and payroll tax withholding is eliminated and all eligible families will be able to consume the basic necessities of life free of tax due to the unique 'prebate' provision in the FairTax legislation.
"Voters should be especially wary of candidates who use scare tactics and deception to win their vote," said Leo Linbeck, Jr., AFFT Co-Founder and CEO. If a candidate wants to support a 77,000-page income tax system that even the IRS can't understand, so be it. But intentionally distorting what is contained in HR 25, the FairTax legislation before Congress, should seriously call that candidate's credibility into question – regardless of party affiliation."
Linbeck added, "The American people are suffering from massive job losses, a collapsing economy and a dysfunctional Congress. In this election year, we believe they deserve to have candidates who speak with integrity, and we intend to call out those candidates who trade in mistruths, half-truths, distortions and sadly, outright lies."
About Fair Tax
Americans for Fair Taxation was formed in 1995. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots organization solely dedicated to replacing the current tax system with a progressive national retail sales tax, a "prebate" to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment.
