American Urological Association Announces Incoming Editor for The Journal of Urology®
Dr. Joseph A. Smith, Jr. named editor of the field's most widely read and highly cited journal
BALTIMORE, Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Joseph A. Smith, Jr., of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been selected by the AUA Board of Directors as the new editor of The Journal of Urology®. Dr. Smith will assume his new role on July 1, 2015.
An active member of the urology community, Dr. Smith is currently William L. Bray professor and chairman of the Department of Urologic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Dr. Smith brings vast editorial experience to his new position, including 25 years of serving as associate editor, assistant editor or editorial board member for more than 15 international and domestic journals, as well as working with The Journal of Urology®, for which he most recently served as associate editor. Additionally, Dr. Smith has co-authored more than 355 journal articles and more than 100 book chapters.

As editor of The Journal of Urology®, Dr. Smith will work with an elite group of associate, section, assistant and feature editors, an Editorial Board and the AUA Board of Directors to fulfill the mission of The Journal and remain at the forefront of such a dynamic field as urology. Additionally, Dr. Smith will be responsible for making recommendations pertaining to improved dissemination of clinical scientific content, advise the editors and Editorial Board members on matters of editorial policy, and coordinate editorial activities with the AUA Publications Department staff and publisher.

Dr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN and received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, TN. He is a leader and member of several medical associations and societies, including the American Medical Association, American Board of Urology, Southeastern Section of the AUA, Society of Urologic Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Society for Laser Surgery, American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, American Association of Clinical Urologists, Société Internationale D'Urologie and Society of University Urologists.
