LINTHICUM, Md., Feb. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Urological Association (AUA), the Urology Care Foundation (Foundation) and Chesapeake Urology Associates (CUA) have strengthened their commitment to securing the future of prostate cancer care through an enhanced $1 million partnership designed to advance prostate cancer research and improve the care for men with or at risk for the disease.
Through the determination of these unique, yet formidable organizations, a new initiative, the Community-Based Research to Advance Prostate Cancer Care program, will be established. This new program is designed to bring together the expertise and resources of community urologists; physician-scientists and researchers in academic institutions; and industry partners vested in prostate cancer research, to conduct studies that can only be achieved by combining the efforts of these three forces who are dedicated to advancing prostate cancer care.
"The invaluable resources available from major community urology practices such as Chesapeake Urology enable the urologic research community to answer important questions that will better guide the management of prostate cancer risk and care," said Sanford J. Siegel, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Chesapeake Urology Associates. "These types of collaborations occur less frequently than one might expect, unfortunately, and that needs to change, which is why I am delighted that we, along with the AUA and Urology Care Foundation, are putting ourselves at the forefront of that change."
With an estimated 220,800 cases expected to be diagnosed in 2015, prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States. And with 27,540 deaths expected this year, it remains the second leading cause of cancer death among men.
A strength to this partnership and the Community-Based Research to Advance Prostate Cancer Care program will be the ability to leverage:
- From community urology practices, a wealth of patient data not typically available from other settings; patients interested in participating in research; and community urologists with research ideas based on their patient populations and data
- From physician-scientists and researchers in academic institutions, unique expertise and research resources required to provide the highest quality research study design and execution
- From industry, national and global resources to support research initiatives relevant to their prostate cancer interests
Additionally, through educational initiatives to build a knowledge base for community urologists to develop research partnerships and collaborations; scholarships to open opportunities for community urologists and academic physician-scientists and researchers to best exchange expertise; data-related services such as study design, data collection, integration, analysis, and reporting; informational resources for best practices in conducting community-based prostate cancer research; and consultation services to increase research funding and publication, the AUA and Urology Care Foundation are well positioned to facilitate the partnerships this new initiative is designed to support.
"Chesapeake Urology Associates has been a longstanding partner in supporting our efforts to advance prostate cancer care and improve the lives of men and their families contending with prostate cancer risk, diagnosis or treatment," said Michael T. Sheppard, AUA executive director. "This new venture represents a bold step forward in bringing community urology practices to the table with the major contributions they are poised to make to advance prostate cancer care through research."
