MESA, Ariz., Oct. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- As National School Bus Safety Week begins, American Traffic Solutions (ATS), reminds drivers to be alert for students getting on and off school buses. ATS is supporting National School Bus Safety week by partnering with schools and law enforcement nationwide to remind motorists of the laws to obey and safe practices to take when approaching a school bus.
Results from ATS' latest review of its CrossingGuard school bus stop arm safety camera programs show the automated enforcement systems continue to deter drivers who might otherwise illegally pass a stopped school bus and put children in danger. The data found a 43 percent decrease in the number of violations issued per bus per month from the first to last month of the 2015-2016 school year.
Just this past school year, school districts in five states working with ATS recorded more than 30,000 vehicles passing stopped school buses.
"Like stopping for a red light, stopping for a school bus while students load or unload is a fundamental rule of driving. Drivers need to remember that children are counting on them to honor the rules of road," ATS Spokesperson Charles Territo said. "With a new school year under way, ATS urges all drivers to refresh their understanding of local traffic laws concerning school buses."
The analysis also found that 99.5 percent of drivers who received one ticket for passing a school bus with its stop arm extended did not receive a second violation. The study's results are strong indicators that drivers are changing their behavior. ATS works closely with school districts and law enforcement agencies to enforce school bus stop arm passing laws. Currently, ATS partners with school districts in five states: Georgia, Washington, Maryland, Virginia and Texas. The cameras record and provide video evidence of motorists who illegally pass a stopped school bus' stop arm to local law enforcement for review and prosecution.
