American Traffic Solutions Applauds Ohio Supreme Court's Decision Affirming Local Authority on Road Safety Cameras

MESA, Ariz., July 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the leading road safety camera provider in North America, applauds Wednesday's ruling by the Ohio Supreme Court which affirms the authority of home rule cities to install and operate speed and red-light safety cameras without having to meet "unconstitutional" provisions of a 2015 law.

Chief among the restrictions lifted by the court is the requirement that an officer be present when cameras are in use.

Other restrictions determined to be illegal by the court are:

• City must conduct a lengthy safety study and public information campaign before using cameras.
• Drivers could only be ticketed if they exceed the posted speed limit by certain amounts, such as 6 mph in a school or park or recreation area, and 10 mph in other areas.

Cities challenging the law asserted that the provisions in question served no rational goal besides limiting the cities' authority.  Writing for the majority, Justice Patrick Fischer said he found these three restrictions "unconstitutionally limit" the municipality's home-rule and legislative authority without serving an overriding state interest.
