American Kidney Fund Brings Kidney Action Day® to 9 U.S. Cities in 2015
ROCKVILLE, Md., Feb. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Kidney Fund (AKF) today announced it will hold Kidney Action Day® events in nine U.S. cities in 2015, bringing chronic kidney disease awareness and free screenings to thousands of individuals who are at risk.
The 2015 Kidney Action Day schedule kicks off during National Kidney Month with Capitol Hill Kidney Action Day on March 4, followed by Memphis Kidney Action Day on March 14. Later in the spring, Kidney Action Day comes to Philadelphia and Boston, followed by summer events in Augusta, Ga., and Chicago, and fall events in Atlanta, Houston and Dallas. AKF's website provides dates and other details about the events.
Held in communities where rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are above the national average, Kidney Action Day features free kidney disease screenings, health education, healthy cooking demonstrations, fitness activities and fun for children.
"We are grateful that corporate, civic and faith-based organizations across the country share our vision of a world without kidney disease and are partnering with us in 2015 to reach more people than ever before with the lifesaving messages of Kidney Action Day," said LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of the American Kidney Fund.
Thirty-one million Americans are living with CKD, and the vast majority of them are unaware they have it. People at risk include those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of CKD. People older than age 60 and members of ethnic minority groups are also at increased risk. Prevention is vital to keeping at-risk individuals in good health, and early detection through testing is a key factor in slowing or stopping the progression of CKD.
Kidney Action Day is possible thanks to the generous support of Presenting National Sponsor American Renal Associates and National Sponsor U.S. Renal Care, Inc.
