Seeks votes in Lowe's first online community giving campaign
WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Forests, which has planted 35 million trees in forest restoration projects in recent years, has been awarded $100,000 from Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation to continue their work, and is competing for a share of $600,000 more in Lowe's first online community giving campaign.
Individuals can vote for American Forests at Lowe's website (www.lowes.com/give) or Facebook page (www.facebook.com/lowes) through midnight, Friday, January 21. Each person may vote once per day per email address.
"We thank Lowe's for their generous support of our important work," said Scott Steen, CEO of the Washington-based environmental organization. "We urge everyone who cares about trees, forests, and the environment to vote their support for American Forests."
American Forests, the nation's oldest conservation group, protects habitat for endangered wildlife, replants forests after devastating wildfires, advocates for sustainable community forestry practices in Washington, and restores forests that remove millions of tons of carbon from the atmosphere. Funds generated through the online voting campaign will help the organization reach its goal to plant more than 6 million trees in 2011 through its Global ReLeaf program and educate the public about the tremendous environmental and social benefits of healthy forests.
"Lowe's has been committed to responsible business practices for more than 65 years, and is continuously looking to improve sustainability efforts," said Michael Chenard, Lowe's director of environmental affairs. "We are excited to help these charities work towards a better future for our planet and future generations."
Four environmental charities – American Forests, Water.org, Keep American Beautiful, and the National Parks Foundation – will receive a total of $1 million from Lowe's and Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation in the online campaign that ends at midnight January 21. Each charity will receive a $100,000 grant, with the remaining $600,000 to be distributed based on the percentage of online votes received by each.
