CHICAGO, Dec. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) will accept grant applications for the 2018 Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program beginning Wednesday, December 6, 2017 through Wednesday, January 24, 2018. This program provides funding opportunities for talented medical students to pursue a career in neuro-oncology research.
This grant opportunity is part of the ABTA's larger research program, which has funded more than $30 million in brain tumor research since its inception. The ABTA's research funding program has led to a better understanding of brain tumors, including the genetic makeup, signaling and microenvironment; new drug development and novel treatments; and enhancements to quality of life for patients.
"The American Brain Tumor Association has a legacy of supporting early-career scientists and helping to keep them in the field of brain tumor research," said ABTA Chief Science Officer Nicole Willmarth, PhD. "Our medical student summer fellowships are unique in that they give medical students, who are still determining the trajectory of their career path, the opportunity to obtain training specifically in brain tumor research."
The Medical Student Summer Fellowships are $3,000 grants awarded to medical students wishing to spend a summer learning new skills and techniques with esteemed scientists who serve as research mentors. Through this opportunity, the ABTA hopes to inspire future physician-scientists to apply their talents and expertise to the brain tumor field.
