American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Names New President
DALLAS, Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Deborah A. Driscoll, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, has been elected president of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG).
A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Genetics and Pediatrics, Dr. Driscoll has been recognized for several years by "Best Doctors in America" and "American's Top Doctors," and was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2010. Dr. Driscoll said she was honored to be the first woman president in the organization's 87 year history but her selection "isn't about gender, but my commitment to high-quality, safe care for women."
ABOG will continue that commitment in 2015 with a strategic planning process. The Board of Directors will review the certification process taking into consideration changes in health care, training, and technology to ensure that the process adequately evaluates the competencies required of obstetrician-gynecologists and subspecialists in the future. "I want to ensure that our Certification and Maintenance of Certification process continues to reassure the public that we are doing our best to provide the high quality care women deserve," Dr. Driscoll said.
"ABOG diplomates need to stay up to date with the literature and practice evidence-based medicine," Dr. Driscoll said. She cited the important role the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) plays in providing educational resources and practice guidelines to our diplomats as well as the resources available through the Foundation for Excellence in Women's Health Care, which support life-long learning.
Dr. Driscoll also serves as the Director of Penn's Center for Research on Reproduction and Women's Health and is the lead investigator for the March of Dimes Center for Prematurity Research at the University of Pennsylvania and for the Women's Reproductive Health Research Career Development Program.
