American Airlines Ranks in Top 100 on 2010 InformationWeek 500
American Recognized as Technology Leader and Innovator
FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines ranked in the top 100 on this year's InformationWeek 500 – a list of the top technology innovators in the United States. The annual list was revealed this week at the exclusive InformationWeek 500 Conference at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, Calif. In addition to the company's ranking in the Top 100, American was a finalist in the Logistics & Transportation category, in recognition of its technology leadership in the aviation industry.
"We are proud to be among the top companies recognized for technology innovation by InformationWeek," said Monte Ford, American's Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President – Information Technology Services. "American is aggressive in its commitment to invest wisely in technology because, with the right strategies and deployments, technology enables us to streamline, modernize and simplify operational issues where the primary recipient of the improvements is the customer."
"For 22 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology," said InformationWeek Editor-In-Chief Rob Preston. "As we start to emerge from the worst recession in decades, the IT focus is now on driving growth – new sources of revenue, new relationships with customers, even new business models. This year's ranking placed special emphasis on those companies and business technology executives leading that charge."
Over the past several years American has moved to the forefront of innovation, helping develop technologies – both customer facing and behind-the-scenes – that are changing the landscape of the airline industry. These technological improvements have resulted in increased operational efficiencies, cost savings and an improved customer experience, solidifying the foundation for American's future success. It ranges from a patented technology that can re-accommodate a plane full of passengers in just minutes; to a visual touch-screen application that puts critical information on arrivals, departures, connections and specifics on customers at the fingertips of ramp tower control employees; to a tool that gives employees access to real-time information about baggage and cargo being unloaded or loaded on the plane.
InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing, and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. The InformationWeek 500 ranking is unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
