American Airlines Customers Can Now Earn and Redeem AAdvantage Miles on airberlin
Expanded Agreement Highlights Customer Benefits as airberlin Prepares to Join oneworld Alliance
FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines and oneworld® alliance member-elect airberlin today are expanding the benefits of their current relationship by allowing customers to earn AAdvantage® miles when flying to Germany and beyond on airberlin, giving customers even more opportunities to boost their mileage balance when traveling abroad. In addition, AAdvantage members can redeem their miles for award tickets on airberlin, which serves 163 destinations in 39 countries.
airberlin is the second largest airline in Germany and conveniently serves several of American's cornerstone markets, including Los Angeles, Miami and New York. The German carrier is expected to officially join the oneworld alliance in early 2012 – just weeks before the opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, which will be a new major hub for Europe when it opens. With the addition of airberlin, oneworld will significantly expand its route network and its ability to offer more services and benefits to customers.
"airberlin is a valued partner of American, and we are delighted to strengthen our relationship by offering our mutual customers these new opportunities to earn and redeem AAdvantage miles," said Virasb Vahidi, American's Chief Commercial Officer. "This is another great incentive for customers to make use of the combined network offered by American and airberlin, which is strengthened by our expanded relationship."
"The international integration of route networks offers major growth opportunities for airberlin and we are pleased to further extend our existing codeshare partnership with American Airlines," said Paul Gregorowitsch, Chief Commercial Officer for airberlin.
American and airberlin have been codesharing since November 2010 on several trans-Atlantic routes, as well as on U.S. domestic and intra-European flights. Most recently, American and airberlin extended their codeshare relationship to include airberlin's service between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Berlin-Tegel.
