American Airlines Celebrates 70 Years Of Service To Mexico
American Will Offer Special Deals and Promotions for Travel Between the US and Mexico to Mark the Special Anniversary
FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines, A founding member of the oneworld® alliance, is proudly celebrating 70 years of service to Mexico. American began service between the United States and Mexico on Sept. 8, 1942, with a flight from Dallas to Monterrey, with continuing service to Mexico City.
"Mexico was American's second international destination, and today, 70 years after our first flight, we reiterate our commitment to the country," said Art Torno, American's Vice President – Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America. "Mexico is a critical market for American and continues to be a very important part of our global route network."
American began operations in Mexico with 20 employees in Mexico City and Monterrey in 1942. Just one year later, American had grown to 168 employees in sales, traffic and cargo. Today, the airline has 840 employees in the country.

"American flies to more destinations in Mexico than any other country outside of the U.S. Currently, American Airlines and American Eagle® serve 18 destinations in Mexico – offering 364 nonstop weekly flights between these destinations in Mexico and our hubs in Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles."
American serves the following markets in Mexico from its U.S. hubs:
- Chicago O'Hare – Cancun, Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, San Jose del Cabo and Mexico City.
- Dallas/Fort Worth – Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Cancun, Chihuahua, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Leon, Mazatlan, Monterrey, Morelia, Puerto Vallarta, San Jose del Cabo, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Torreon, Veracruz, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Puebla*.
- Los Angeles – San Jose del Cabo
- Miami – Mexico City and Cancun.
- New York JFK – Cancun
*Service to begin in November 2012.
