American Airlines C. R. Smith Museum Catches 'Super Bowl Fever'
Exhibition Celebrates 100 Years, 100 Greatest Moments of North Texas Football
FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines roots – and routes – go deep into Texas. And so does football. The earliest organized "bowl" game was played by The University of Texas and Oklahoma University in 1912. That precursor to the famous "Red River Rivalry" even beat American Airlines predecessor companies into the history books by 14 years. As a sponsor of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee, American Airlines and the C. R. Smith Museum are pleased to present "Century in the Making," a look back at the 100 greatest moments in the 100 years of North Texas football history.
Those moments range from the famous to the infamous: from the 1967 Ice Bowl between the Cowboys and Packers, to the 1954 Cotton Bowl play where an over-enthusiastic Alabama player lunged from the sidelines to tackle a Rice player. The exhibition also includes TCU legend Davey O'Brien's football helmet and plaque from the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, as well as a jersey and helmet from the groundbreaking game between Grapevine Faith High School and the Gainesville State School. As you'd expect, with 100 years of history to tell, there are many other pieces of memorabilia and historic artifacts.
The exhibition was developed from the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee's online project also entitled "Century in the Making." The top 100 moments in North Texas football history were selected by football fans through an online ballot.
The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 12 at the C.R. Smith Museum located at State Highway 360 and FAA Road. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Visit www.crsmithmuseum.org for additional information.
