"After a career spanning more than five decades, and service on and leading a countless number of committees, he continues to give back, and he continues to serve," said Academy President Mary Frances Miller, who presented the award to Abroe.
Abroe first volunteered for the Academy in 1994. After volunteering for numerous committees throughout his career, he would eventually serve as the vice president of the Academy's Health Practice Council from 2004 to 2006. More recently, Abroe has been leading the Academy's efforts to work with regulators who are implementing sections of the Affordable Care Act that create new rules for filing and reviewing health insurance premium rates. He also currently serves as the chairperson of the Actuarial Standards Board General Committee.
Before joining Milliman in 1985, he was a vice president and health actuary at Bankers Life and Casualty, where he began his career in 1966. He is a graduate of Lake Forest College in Illinois. The service award was established in 1991 in honor of Jarvis Farley, a charter member of the Academy. Farley was a highly respected figure in the actuarial profession who gave tirelessly to the professional association. The Academy presents the award to individuals who continue Farley's
spirit of volunteer service to the actuarial profession.
