America Haunts Reveals List of Its Truly Haunted Attractions
Storied pasts add to the allure of Halloween attractions
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Stunning set designs, technical excellence and Hollywood-quality make-up, costumes and creatures are hallmarks of America Haunts attractions. But the association's more than 30 elite haunted attractions throughout the U.S. revealed something a little extra at several of its attractions: real ghosts!
"All our haunts have the ability to frighten even the bravest of souls, but some are truly haunted and have been verified by paranormal experts," said Amber Arnett-Bequeaith of America Haunts. "Knowing about their presence both fascinates and frightens our visitors."
The America Haunts locations that are actually haunted are:
- Chambers of Edgar Allen Poe in Kansas City and is located in an old warehouse. In the late 1980s, the building was converted into a haunted house, but closed after there was a fatal freak accident in an elevator shaft. Full Moon Productions purchased it in 2006, completely renovating it and opening the Chambers. During construction, workers reported the feeling of being touched when no one was around, eventually refusing to work alone in the building.
- Netherworld, located in Norcross, Georgia, was recently investigated by Ghost Hunters International, which determined that there is enough evidence for them to state that the site is paranormally active.
- Nightmare on the Bayou is located near Houston's oldest graveyard. Employees and guests alike have reported numerous ghost sightings and frequent paranormal activity.
- Cutting Edge resides in an abandoned meat packing plant in Fort Worth. Built in 1908, and later abandoned, visitors today continue to report eerie occurrences. In 2009, Cutting Edge was Guinness World Records' world's largest haunted house.
- Erebus Haunted Attraction, located in Pontiac, Michigan, was featured in an episode of "My Ghost Story: Caught on Camera," a program about paranormal activity and the people who have experienced it.
- Pennhurst Asylum in Spring City, Pa., is the former site of a state school for the mentally and physically disabled. There have been numerous news reports about poor living conditions and mistreatment of patients. Today, some of those same patients still linger and terrify visitors.
As if these actually haunted properties were not enough, Denver's 13th Floor currently is being investigated for paranormal activity.
"The folklore of the supernatural presence at some of our haunted attractions absolutely adds to the allure and creepiness factor," said Arnett-Bequeaith. "But we recommend that people visit and decide for themselves whether to believe they are truly haunted."
