Amazon Studios and Skyhorse Publishing Are Celebrating the Forthcoming Release of Last Flag Flying
NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the wildly successful film adaptation of Darryl Ponicsán's The Last Detail starring Jack Nicholson, the newly released sequel, Last Flag Flying, will also appear on the big screen. Amazon Studios and Lionsgate are releasing the new major motion picture Last Flag Flying on November 3, from director Richard Linklater and starring Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, and Laurence Fishburne. With an all-star cast and crew, author Ponicsán's sweeping success, the film's nationwide release next month and book's movie tie-in release on November 14 are poised for greatness.
Last Flag Flying received a warm welcome as the opener to the New York Film Festival on September 28 at the Lincoln Center, where the film's director Richard Linklater gave a nod to Amazon Studios, saying, "We've been trying to make this film for ten years and Amazon finally came on board and said, 'Hey, we like this, let's do this.' So, bless them."
In addition to praise from the book trade publication Booklist, which recommends "both novels and the movie," actor Bryan Cranston is impressed with the novel and its author. "Darryl has once again captured the camaraderie and complexity of male bonding, as he did so brilliantly in The Last Detail", he said. "Three familiar characters, now some thirty years later, with a dubious history and an undesirable task ahead of them are what dominate the fascinating and satisfying story in Last Flag Flying."
In Last Flag Flying, Ponicsán tells the poignant, heartwarming, and funny tale of an unlikely trio of men on a solemn mission. A surprisingly moving story of male friendship, both tough and tender, it is at once a protest against injustice and a celebration of life.
The sequel to Ponicsán's cult classic novel features the same beloved characters—Billy "Bad-Ass" Buddusky, Mule Mulhall, and Larry Meadows—at a later stage in life. Now middle-aged, Meadows seeks out the older men to help him bury his only son, a Marine killed in Iraq, in Arlington National Cemetery. When he learns that the authorities have lied to him about the circumstances of his son's senseless death, he decides with the help of the other two to transport him home to Portsmouth. And so, begins a journey to find solace somehow and bring a child home.
