Although Smaller Than Other National Carriers, Offering Competitive Products Could Result in Significant Enrollment Gains for Health Net in California

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that despite Health Net's small size compared to national carriers, its ability to offer narrow-network products (access to groups of physicians and hospitals at a lower cost) to small and medium-group markets will be key to growth in California, where it is currently the fifth-largest insurer.

According to the National MCO Analyzer: Health Net, driving volume to a smaller number of providers in exchange for lower costs will be important as employers try to maintain health benefits. In addition, a recent contract with the California Prison Healthcare Receivership Corp., which oversees the state's 33 prison facilities, is a step forward in building Health Net's HMO approach.
