SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Altera Corporation hosted its inaugural Altera Foundation Cup (AFC) charity golf tournament in September and raised $30,000 for Resource Area For Teaching (RAFT), a Silicon Valley non-profit organization that provides creative educational activities for teachers specializing in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. RAFT serves 7,300 educators and 630,000 students each year in the Bay Area.

"As we approach RAFT's 20th anniversary, we are continually developing new ways to support educators in their efforts to increase student learning," says RAFT Founder and Executive Director Mary Simon. "This would simply not be possible without the creative, resource-generating efforts of dedicated groups like Altera."
Vince Hu, vice president for Altera's worldwide field application engineering organization, served as lead organizer for the tournament. He said, "We recognize the value RAFT brings to teachers and students and are proud we could raise the much-needed funds to support their continued good work."
More than 130 golfers turned out for the event held at a golf course in Los Altos, California. Golfers included representatives from Altera, Advantest, Amkor, Arrow, Arteris, AES, Stevens Creek BMW, Cisco, Cypress, Digi-key, EMC, GSI Technology, ISI-Nallatech, Kinsus, KPMG, Linear Tech, Macnica, Mouser, NetApp, TI and Unimicron.
The funds raised through the Altera Foundation Cup represent the latest contribution donated through the Altera Foundation in support of STEM programs. In 2012, The Altera foundation issued a $500,000 grant to a local Silicon Valley-based school system to provide children with better access to classroom technology and further technology-based teaching methods.
The Altera Foundation was established to further Altera's charitable giving efforts. The foundation supports Altera's corporate values, especially the belief that innovation enables the betterment of individuals, communities, and society. Through company donations and employee giving, the foundation encourages the application of STEM education to solve real-world problems.
