Alteon Health to reach thousands more patients through leading health system partnerships
GERMANTOWN, Md., Jan. 31, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Alteon Health, a Maryland-based industry-leading medical group, is proud to announce several new partnerships that are expanding patients' access to high-quality emergency and hospitalist care in southern Virginia, central Indiana and New York.
Community Health Systems (CHS), one of the largest hospital organizations in the country, has selected Alteon to begin providing emergency medicine services at four of its southeast Virginia facilities beginning April 1. The four sites (Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg and Southside Emergency Care Center in Colonial Heights) see a combined 98,000 emergency department visits per year. When Alteon assumes management of these EDs, it will become the largest acute care medical group in the commonwealth.
"Alteon providers now manage nearly one in five ED encounters in Virginia," says Dr. Martin Brown, President of Alteon's Mid-Atlantic region, which includes the new CHS sites.
Alteon will also provide hospitalist services at three of the CHS Virginia hospitals, for a total 50,000 patient encounters per year, under the oversight of Dr. Jose Aguirre, President of Alteon's Hospitalist Medicine Division. The new partnership builds on one of the physician-led practice's key strengths: providing quality, efficient, vertically integrated services through the synchronized management of inpatient and emergency medicine programs. It also provides new opportunities to further Alteon's commitment to leveraging innovative models of care. Two of the sites will utilize telemedicine services to provide overnight emergency department coverage.
In another new partnership with a leading health system, on February 1 Alteon will assume management of emergency medicine services at Indiana University (IU) Health's Frankfort Hospital, a 25-bed critical access facility located 40 miles northwest of Indianapolis. IU Health is the state's premiere provider of medical services and one of the 30 largest non-profit health systems in the United States.
"Frankfort Hospital is new to IU Health as well, so it's an exciting time for both partners," says Vincent Morra, President of Alteon's Midwest and Northeast divisions. "As they make improvements to the physical campus, we look forward to supporting them with our expertise in providing high-quality medical services in critical access facilities."
In addition to expanding Alteon's critical access portfolio, the IU Health Frankfort Hospital partnership provides an opportunity to better coordinate emergency and post-acute care services in central Indiana, where Alteon provides post-acute care in nearly 40 long-term care, assisted living and rehabilitation facilities.
As his Midwest team prepares a smooth transition to IU Health Frankfort, Morra's Northeast Division is settling in at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, a 257-bed independent facility in Far Rockaway, New York, where Alteon began providing emergency medicine services on November 28, 2018. St. John's is the only hospital serving the Rockaway Peninsula region of Queens.
"This is a unique opportunity for Alteon to play a key role in serving this diverse, developing region of New York that has traditionally been underserved medically," Morra says.
The St. John's emergency department, under the leadership of Dr. Teddy Lee, sees some 50,000 patient visits annually. Alteon manages four other emergency departments on Long Island and looks forward to leveraging its experience and resources in the New York market to enhance the quality of care for Rockaway residents.
"All three of these new partnerships help solidify Alteon's already strong position in these markets," Brown says. "We're thrilled at the votes of confidence in our abilities, and eager to extend our compassionate, best-in-class services to more patients."
