MEMPHIS, Tenn., Feb. 15, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 30 mayors from the Mid-South comprising cities, counties and municipalities across Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas spent part of their Valentine's Day learning more about the critical mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The delegation of mayors were invited by Richard Shadyac, Jr., President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; the Honorable Lee Harris, Mayor of Shelby County, Tennessee; and the Honorable Jim Strickland, Mayor of the City of Memphis in partnership with the Urban Land Institute – Memphis.
"This was a fantastic opportunity for us to share with the group of mayors from the Tri-state area, firsthand, the wide-ranging impact ALSAC and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has on the region," said Richard Shadyac, Jr. "It was a privilege for us to host them with Mayor Harris and Mayor Strickland, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen and grow our relationships with them and their constituencies, many of whom already generously support or work for our mission."
"This gathering was truly a win-win for everyone who attended," said Mayor Harris. "We were able to highlight both the economic impact of St. Jude on the Tri-state region as well as the resulting workforce development opportunities that are being created because of its reach."
Jeff Huffman, County Executive, Tipton County, Tenn., echoed the sentiments of Mayor Harris.
"St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a tremendous asset to citizens all across the Mid-South," Huffman said. "It was great to learn more about and see firsthand the ambitious expansion plans currently taking place and over the next several years. It's an unbelievable development for the entire region."
Sally Wilson, the mayor of Osceola, Ark., said that it was also important for the group of mayors to tour the hospital and see the impact that St. Jude has on patients and families across the United States.
"Our hospital tour really put everything into perspective," Wilson said. "The mission of St. Jude is unlike any other and I look forward to encouraging those I represent to support it any way they can – whether that is through fundraising, volunteering or simply sharing a link on social media."
