Alpha Natural Resources Announces Availability of Scholarship Applications
ABINGDON, Va., Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Alpha Natural Resources has begun accepting applications for its 2011 high school scholarships. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 31, 2011. Applications and promotional materials about the scholarship programs will be available at 150 high schools in the geographic areas surrounding Alpha and its affiliates' operations.
For 2011, 53 renewable scholarships from four different programs will be awarded to deserving high school seniors. Annual scholarship amounts range from $1,000 to $2,500.
Scholarship Management Services™, a nationally known third-party administrator, will select scholarship recipients. Selection criteria include: academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspiration, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.
Alpha Natural Resources' High School Scholars Award scholarship program, founded in 2009, is one of the largest high school scholarship programs in the mining industry. The company's long-range plan is to provide higher education scholarship assistance to up to 500 high school students over the next decade, representing an estimated $4 million commitment on the part of Alpha. Since 2003, the company has donated approximately $1.7 million to college foundations, most of which has been used for scholarship purposes.
