RALEIGH, N.C., April 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Coming off a record-setting year in the sixth running of the annual Allscripts Tobacco Road Marathon (TRM) and GNC Half Marathon presented by Inside-Out Sports, event officials announced "early bird" discount registration effective now. Those who register before April 20 will enjoy pricing of $50 for either the full or half marathon March 13, 2016 events. A schedule of price increases over the coming months is available at the race Web site.
The 2015 event broke numerous USA Track & Field records and eclipsed the event weekend's charitable giving milestone of one half million dollars. Next year's races returns to the Carolina pine-lined American Tobacco Trail (ATT) with its flat, fast, granite-screen course. TRM qualifies 10 percent of its competitors for the Boston Marathon and was named among Runner's World Magazine's top nine new marathons in 2014.
"We had record registration this year, almost course capacity," says TRM President, Founder and ten-time Boston Marathon Qualifier Kazem Yahyapour. "Our runners pushed us past the half million dollar mark in helping our charities."
Both courses are USA Track & Field (USATF) certified. They follow the same path for two miles and then diverge as full marathon runners head north and those in the half turn south to enter the ATT. The first two and last two miles of the courses are on paved roads – the rest are on the ATT. The runners start from the USA Baseball & Thomas Brooks Park in Cary. The course is largely devoid of hills and the average high temperature (51 degrees Fahrenheit) delivers an ideal performance environment.
All proceeds from both events will go to the following charities: JDRF, the Wounded Warrior Project, the Red Cross and the Rails to Trails Conservancy as well as Wake County Parks and Recreation. This year TRM made $110,000 in donations. For the first time TRM contributed to the ALS Foundation, Catfish Hunter Chapter by matching the $5,000 contribution of Larry Stogner, former anchor at event media partner WTVD ABC-11.
The Tobacco Road Marathon Association is a non-profit organization dedicated with its sponsors to providing financial assistance to partner charities by channeling the passions of the North Carolina Triangle area's running community into a powerful force for good.
