HOUSTON, June 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Senator John Cornyn and over 100 professionals, including current and former heads of state, executive officers, U.S. business leaders, CPA partners and business advisors from across the nation gathered over the past two days for alliantgroup's Economic, Legislative & Policy Summit—the latest event in alliantgroup's Think Tank series.
Senator Cornyn gave the keynote address today, covering a broad range of topics on the minds of CPAs and businesses in an open "town hall" style session. Specifically, Cornyn focused on Congress's legislative priorities for the rest of the year, which includes a new budget bill, the debt ceiling, healthcare and tax reform. Senator Cornyn indicated that many of these issues will be addressed in the coming months, pointing to a few loose deadlines set by congressional leadership. According to Cornyn, GOP leadership has set a goal of voting on a new healthcare bill in the Senate before the July 4th recess. This would be followed by a big push on tax reform in the both the House and Senate.
"If we can do healthcare reform, and if we can do tax reform, I would say that would be a good 2017," said Cornyn.
While comprehensive tax reform is a key goal for congressional Republicans, during his Q&A session, Cornyn tempered expectations for a complete overhaul of the tax code. Instead, Senator Cornyn forecast a much more likely scenario of a reduction in corporate and individual tax rates, along with other pro-business changes. Cornyn reaffirmed his commitment to reforms that would encourage economic growth and lessen the regulatory burdens on U.S. businesses.
"Our goal on tax reform, which I know is very much front and center in your attention, is to make a pro-growth tax code," said Cornyn. "It's gotten so complex, it's become an impediment to economic growth."
"I would like to thank Senator Cornyn and everyone who took the time to attend this event," said Dhaval Jadav, alliantgroup CEO. "Our goal in hosting these conferences is to provide thought leadership to our CPA firms and the businesses they serve.
