HOUSTON, June 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley and CPAs, financial advisors, business leaders and heads of associations gathered for an exclusive Economic and Tax Policy Summit hosted by alliantgroup in Des Moines, Iowa. The event included an interactive town hall session with Senator Grassley that focused on congressional priorities over the coming months and other important economic and tax policy issues impacting Iowa businesses.
During his keynote presentation, Senator Grassley provided an update on where Congress stood on key legislative priorities such as healthcare, tax reform and a new budget bill. According to Grassley, healthcare currently sits at the top of the agenda, with a vote on the Senate healthcare bill expected later this week.
In addition to Grassley's presentation, alliantgroup Executive Vice President Sonny Grover and former Senior Counsel to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee and alliantgroup National Managing Director Dean Zerbe provided their own thoughts on recent tax policy developments and the various incentives available to Iowa state businesses. In particular, both Grover and Zerbe focused on the recent modifications made to the Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credit that have expanded access to the credit to small and mid-size businesses from across the country. These changes have also served to further expand the credit into numerous industries, many of which have a strong presence in Iowa. For example, Zerbe and Grover listed the agricultural industry—specifically, the work of agricultural co-ops—as strong candidates for the credit.
"While it was important to have Iowa businesses and CPA firms better understand how the R&D Tax Credit can help reduce their taxes, it was just as valuable for me to hear first-hand from Iowans the positive impact of Section 199 for co-ops and their views on other tax issues that are being considered by Congress. This perspective on tax from the heartland will be a real benefit as alliantgroup continues to be a voice for small and medium businesses in Washington, D.C."
During the event, Senator Grassley reaffirmed his passion for the state and its agricultural industry, and strongly encouraged Iowa's agricultural based businesses to look into the R&D Tax Credit and the various government incentives designed for their benefit.
"I would like to thank Senator Grassley and everyone who took the time to attend this event," said Dhaval Jadav, alliantgroup CEO. "Our goal in hosting these events is to provide thought leadership to our CPA firms and the businesses they serve. By providing our partner CPAs and businesses the information they need to stay ahead of emerging economic and policy trends, it is our hope that we are offering another avenue to ensure their continued success."
