Alliance Urges Obama to Push Energy Efficiency as Engine of Job Creation in State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Alliance to Save Energy today urged President Obama to use his State of the Union address to make a strong case for energy efficiency as an engine of job creation.
The Alliance backs residential and commercial building retrofits to increase their energy efficiency while saving money for consumers and businesses and notes that upgrading existing buildings is an important first step towards ensuring long-term, strategic energy use in the United States.
"With an historic high in construction unemployment and millions of leaky and energy-inefficient existing buildings, now is the time for America to get our own house in order through energy efficiency retrofits that will create many new jobs," said Alliance President Kateri Callahan.
"More importantly," Callahan added, "securing our built environment will set a strong foundation for long-term energy policy in the United States, including energy standards for future buildings and appliances, incentives for utilities to save energy and a price on carbon to encourage energy innovation.
"By this time next year, we expect that the president will be able to report progress in both the home retrofit programs and these critical long-term energy efficiency solutions."
The Alliance to Save Energy is a coalition of prominent business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders who promote the efficient and clean use of energy worldwide to benefit consumers, the environment, the economy, and national security.
