Joe Haan was orphaned at age seven during the Great Depression and indentured as a virtual slave to a brutal farmer for eight long years. Yet he emerged as a self-educated survivor and World War II hero under General Patton during the Battle of the Bulge, America's largest and bloodiest World War II battle. Haan lived two-thirds of his life in Houston, where he and his wife raised two sons, and he was a Lifetime Member of Houston's Ironworkers Local 84.
Quist will be making appearances throughout October and November, including Wednesday, November 10 at Barnes & Noble Lincoln Park in Dallas, and Thursday, November 11 at Barnes & Noble Northwoods in San Antonio. Earlier on November 11, Quist will appear along with Senator John Cornyn as part of the Veterans Day Celebration at the Admiral Nimitz Museum: National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas. On November 13, the Harris County AFL-CIO Council and the Houston Ironworkers Local 84 will host an event for Quist in Houston. This exhibit will feature pictures of buildings in downtown Houston that Joe Haan helped construct. A reading of Haan's poem "High Steel" will also be featured.
"Joe Haan's story trumpets a universal truth that isn't repeated enough today – you can win at most things if you just won't quit," said David Mahmood, Chairman of Allegiance Capital. "Haan's thirst for knowledge and grit are in each of us, we just need to call them up and keep marching forward."
