RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Jan. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The EPA has approved a supplemental label in California easing the restrictions of flood irrigation following application of Alion® herbicide from Bayer. Effective immediately, orchards and vineyards of stone fruit, pome fruit, grapes, tree nuts and olives may be flood irrigated after a 60-day waiting period following application of Alion.
Alion is a broad spectrum pre-emerge herbicide that controls many grasses and broadleaf weeds, including glyphosate resistant species, with up to six months of residual pre-emergent weed control.
"The label change is particularly important in California, where tree and vine growers have been struggling with widespread glyphosate- and ALS-resistant weeds," says Nevada Smith, Bayer Product Manager. "The residual activity of Alion and its alternative mode of action have established Alion as a foundational element in the herbicide arsenal."
The EPA's recent reduced restrictions pertaining to flood irrigation give growers even more flexibility when it comes to structuring an effective weed control strategy based on their specific challenges."
Alion is a cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor (CBI) – WSSA Group 20 - which reduces the need for residual tankmix partners, especially in resistant weed situations. There are currently no documented cases of resistance to CBI chemistries in the United States. Alion's alternative mode of action (MOA) helps boost the effectiveness of herbicide resistance management programs by reducing the selection pressure typically caused by overuse of a single MOA.
