Ali Rezaian to Attend State of the Union as Guest of Congressman Jared Huffman (CA-02)
Presence will Recognize His Brother, Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post Journalist Illegally Detained in Iran
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tonight, Ali Rezaian, brother of Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian, will attend President Obama's final State of the Union address as a guest of Congressman Jared Huffman. Congressman Huffman represents California's 2nd Congressional District, which includes Marin County—where Jason and Ali Rezaian were born and raised.
Ahead of tonight's speech, Ali Rezaian had this to say:
"I am truly humbled by this opportunity to attend the State of the Union on behalf of my brother Jason and our family. Congressman Huffman has been a staunch advocate in the fight to free Jason, and my family and I could not be more grateful for his support.
Jason is a talented journalist who should be covering tonight's address. Instead, he remains unlawfully jailed in Iran's infamous Evin prison, where he has now been held for 541 days—even though he committed no crime. We are grateful for the incredible support of The Washington Post and the efforts of Members of Congress, the Obama Administration, the United Nations, Jason's fellow journalists, and people around the world in seeking to secure my brother's freedom.
My family and I will continue to do everything we can to ensure that Jason's plight is front and center until he is free. The time is now for this nightmare to come to an end. Jason deserves to return to his life as a husband, a son, a brother, and a respected journalist."
