Alert declared at Fermi 2 due to minor fire

MONROE, Mich., March 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Operators at the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant declared an Alert at about 2 p.m. today when a small fire was detected on insulation for an emergency diesel generator. The diesel generator was being operated for testing when this occurred.

The fire was extinguished with a hand-held fire extinguisher within minutes.

An Alert is the second of four event classifications designed to efficiently align plant resources.  The Alert was terminated at 3:32 p.m.

The plant has four emergency diesel generators that are used to power necessary equipment if the plant loses off-site power.

There were no injuries and the fire was contained to the area of the diesel engine. 

At no time was there any danger to the public, or to plant operations.

The plant currently is in cold shutdown.  We have been shut down since Feb. 10 for a planned refueling and maintenance outage.
