Alcatel-Lucent IMS- and 4G LTE-Based Network Supports Over-the-Air VoLTE Demonstration Using Pre-Commercial Smartphones
Mobile World Congress demo done together with Verizon Wireless, the GSMA and LG Electronics
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the world's first-ever public demonstrations of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) using a pre-commercial handset can be experienced this week at Mobile World Congress. The demo marks a major milestone in the evolution of the LTE ecosystem and takes VoLTE from an idea to a reality.
Alcatel-Lucent is providing an advanced IMS- and 4G-LTE based network that will support actual VoLTE calls being made to and from the Verizon Wireless, GSM Association and LG Electronics booths at the show. The demonstration will feature IMS/LTE-based video-communications and wideband audio calls using pre-commercial handsets among the partner booths in Barcelona. The Alcatel-Lucent booth also includes IMS/4G LTE-based demos that incorporate VoLTE into advanced applications, such as enhanced mobile retail, remote health care and early childhood education.

Supporting quotes:
Sandip Mukerjee, President IMS Solutions at Alcatel-Lucent:
"VoLTE helps make the magic of LTE a reality by creating new conversations. That same investment also enables service providers to rapidly create and deploy applications, that weave audio and video to deliver new services on new devices. Thanks to standards-based IMS and LTE networks, these services will be enjoyed with global roaming and service interoperability."
Tony Melone, Chief Technology Officer for Verizon:
"The promise of VoLTE is gaining traction. This isn't about just making phone calls, but about creating high quality all-IP wireless that enables rich communications services such as video chat. This is yet another proof point that the LTE ecosystem is alive, healthy and thriving. VoLTE will quickly become the global standard for delivering voice over LTE networks."
Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer at the GSMA:
"The GSMA launched a voice over LTE initiative a year ago with the aim of driving a single, industry-wide solution for voice and messaging services via IP. The progress made by the GSMA and its members to enable this functionality will play a crucial role in driving strong momentum and vast economies of scale for LTE all over the world."
