Alabama Continues to See Wide Success with the NPLEx System
LUTHERVILLE, Md., June 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) today highlights the noteworthy results achieved by Alabama's real-time, stop-sale pseudoephedrine (PSE) tracking system during the first quarter of 2015.
The National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) system automatically blocks unlawful PSE purchases at the point of sale and blocks convicted drug offenders from purchasing PSE. Police officers and narcotics agents often set up NPLEx "watch lists" that notify them via email when a meth suspect attempts to purchase PSE. The data from NPLEx shows that during the first quarter of 2015, the system blocked the sale of over 7,500 boxes of PSE-containing medicine, keeping almost 19,000 grams from being illegally purchased in Alabama.
"NPLEx, in conjunction with the state's drug offender registry, has helped Alabama decrease meth lab incidents by over 79 percent," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of NADDI. "Serving as a tool that keeps pseudoephedrine out of the hands of criminals, NPLEx has continued to be a great asset for law enforcement officers and pharmacists across the state. Alabama has been a model for states across the nation looking to stop meth production without burdening law-abiding citizens."
