Rachel Pollack, in a recent article ("Containing Cargo Security" in the May/June 2016 issue of Scrap) described how theft of high-value non-ferrous scrap cargo has been increasing since the late 2000s. In most cases, the locks and seals on pilfered containers remain intact, and so it is difficult to detect an intrusion until the cargo is weighed by the buyer and a percentage of the cargo is found missing. "IoT technology can be an effective preventive measure in reducing cargo thefts by providing a real-time breach detection to pinpoint the exact time and location of an intrusion," said Neil Furukawa, CEO of AKUA. "The evidence data can then be used to change shipping practices in ways that will reduce the likelihood of theft."
