Akron-Canton Airport has Second Best Year Ever; Capacity Up For the First Months of 2010
GREEN, Ohio, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The worst global recession in history didn't stop travelers from throughout Northeast Ohio from finding low fares and a relaxing customer experience at the Akron-Canton Airport (CAK). A little more than 1.44 million customers traveled to and from CAK in 2009, making it the airport's second-best year of all time. That figure is off just 1.7 percent compared to 2008, the airport's best year. That is in stark contrast to national passenger figures that declined 6 percent in 2009 compared with 2008, according to the Air Transport Association.
"We are thrilled to celebrate our second best year ever," said Rick McQueen, president and CEO. "Although we'd like to show an increase every year, the various external factors that influenced air travel like the economy, airline capacity reductions and suppressed demand made an increase nearly impossible. So, we are satisfied with 2009 and poised to thrive in 2010."
AirTran Airways, the airport's largest volume airline, carried 676,382 total passengers in 2009. Of note, United Express gained a 7 percent increase compared to 2008 and US Airways was up 2 percent. Two new flights also contributed to the increase. Nonstop service to Washington Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. kicked off in January 2009 aboard US Airways and flights to Ft. Lauderdale began in November on AirTran Airways. Looking ahead, CAK is the only airport in the state showing increased seat capacity in early 2010.
