AK Steel Announces Company's 2010 Sons and Daughters Scholarship Recipients
WEST CHESTER, Ohio, May 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) is continuing a longstanding tradition this year by awarding college scholarships to sons and daughters of company employees. The awards recognize outstanding academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.
"Earning an AK Steel scholarship speaks volumes about the students and families associated with our company," said James L. Wainscott, AK Steel chairman, president and CEO. "We congratulate all of our recipients for their achievements – and applaud them for demonstrating the values that help make AK Steel a successful company."
The scholarships are funded by the AK Steel Foundation and are worth a maximum $20,000 each. The Middletown, Ohio Community Foundation independently selects each recipient.
2010 Scholarship Recipients:
- Alycia Acquaviva, daughter of Richard and Suzette Acquaviva of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.
Alycia attends Seneca Valley Senior High School where she is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the President's Education Award, as well as the Certificate of Achievement from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. She participates in student council and mock trial competitions, and is the president of key club. Alycia is a volunteer softball coach, Relay for Life team captain and religious education teacher. She also participates in Cranberry Cup, an event that benefits families in need. Her father, Richard Acquaviva, works in the cold mill maintenance department at Butler Works.
- Mackenzie Brauns, daughter of John and Mary Anne Brauns of West Chester, Ohio.
Mackenzie attends Lakota West High School where she is a high honor student and member of the National Honor Society. She is a member of the Ohio All-State Orchestra, Ohio District 13 Honor Band and was a finalist for the Cincinnati Arts Association's Overture Award. Mackenzie participates in concert band, marching band and jazz band, as well as lacrosse, Spanish club and the science Olympiad team. She mentors the junior high science Olympiad team and tutors elementary school children as a Junior Achievement volunteer. Mackenzie's father, John Brauns, works in the stores and spares department at Middletown Works.
- Aaron Clapper, son of Eric and Peggy Clapper of Zanesville, Ohio.
Aaron attends West Muskingum High School where he is senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society and key club. He is an AP student, president and state vice president of Future Business Leaders of America and a member of the Muskingum County Community Youth Foundation. Aaron participates in church outreach programs and volunteers for the "Tools for Schools" program in his community. He is also an active member of the "Care Team" and a senior mentor to first-year high school students. Aaron's father, Eric Clapper, works in the electrical maintenance department at Zanesville Works.
- Christopher Dudek, son of Russell and Linda Dudek of Prospect, Pennsylvania.
Christopher attends Slippery Rock Area High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and recipient of the Butler Leader of Tomorrow Award. He was elected to attend Keystone Boys State and is captain of the soccer team – the first in his school's history to win a District 10 AA championship. Christopher also participates in jazz band, musicals, chamber singers and several clubs. He is an altar server for his church, a camp staff member and a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Christopher's father, Russell Dudek, works in the environmental affairs department at Butler Works.
- Abigail Fair, daughter of Kenneth and Karen Fair of Butler, Pennsylvania.
Abigail attends Butler Senior High School where she is a high honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. She is co-captain of the flag team and a dance team competitor. Abigail participates in student council, French club, honors chorus and school musicals. She also participates in ensemble and chanticleer choir, as well as district chorus. Abigail is a vacation Bible school helper and a volunteer dance instructor. She also volunteers for Relay for Life, Special Olympics and Rotary Club service projects. Her father, Kenneth Fair, works in the silicon processing department at Butler Works.
- Daniel Garrett, son of Greg and Barb Garrett of Monroe, Ohio.
Daniel attends Lakota East High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society. He was awarded Maxima and Summa Cum Laude for high scores on the National Latin Exam, and has served as vice captain of the academic quiz team. Daniel is president of the Junior Classical League and section leader for the marching band. He is also the editor of his school's magazine. Daniel is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta math club and a volunteer tutor. He also participates in church outreach programs and mission work. Daniel's father, Greg Garrett, works in the electrical maintenance and control department at Middletown Works.
- Brian Gaston, son of Gregory and Maureen Gaston of Middletown, Ohio.
Brian attends Bishop Fenwick High School where he is an honor student and Cincinnatus Scholarship participant. He is key club president and a four-year member of the cross country and track teams. He also participates in both the Spanish club and art club, and is a volunteer camera operator for TV Middletown. Brian has completed more than 600 volunteer hours at the Atrium Medical Center in Middletown. He is also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a Life Scout mentor to younger scouts in the organization. Brian's father, Gregory Gaston, works in the hot strip maintenance department at Middletown Works.
- Caitlin Gowins, daughter of Michael and Mindy Gowins of Coshocton, Ohio.
Caitlin attends River View High School where she is a senior class officer and a member of the National Honor Society. She is a recipient of the Academic Award of Excellence and the Ohio High School Softball Coaches Association's Scholar Athlete Award. Caitlin is a member of the softball and volleyball teams, as well as student council, math club, spirit club and German club. She participates in Swim for Diabetes and supports the Red Cross and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. She is also a volunteer softball instructor and peer tutor. Caitlin's father, Michael Gowins, works in the mechanical maintenance department at Coshocton Works.
- Kathryn Hendrickson, daughter of Brian and Cheryl Hendrickson of Seven Mile, Ohio.
Kathryn attends Edgewood High School where she is an honor student and member of the National Honor Society. She excels in her AP coursework and is a member of the Spanish Honor Society. Kathryn participates in show choir and musicals, and is the historian of her high school's Thespian troupe. She is a member of Edge Ambassadors, a group that raises money and awareness to help fight homelessness in the community. She is also a canned food drive volunteer and coordinator during the holiday season. Kathryn's father, Brian Hendrickson, works in the north processing department at Middletown Works.
- Alexa Kriley, daughter of James and Sandra Kriley of Butler, Pennsylvania.
Alexa attends Butler Senior High School where she is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Presidential Award. She is also a Rotary Youth Leadership Award nominee. Alexa participates in marching band and is a lettering member of the varsity swim team. She is also active in French club and Stand Tall, her school's drug awareness program. Alexa is a book drive and Habitat for Humanity volunteer, as well as a youth swimming instructor. She also volunteers to assists children with special needs. Her father, James Kriley, works in the central maintenance department at Butler Works.
- Aaron Lawson, son of Eric and Juley Lawson of Middletown, Ohio.
Aaron attends Middletown High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Greater Miami Conference All Academic Award. He is also a member of the German National Honor Society. Aaron is a state qualifier in swimming, as well as a member of the German club, a capella choir and the cross country team. He is a study table tutor, volunteer swim coach and Habitat for Humanity volunteer. He also participates in the YMCA's Caring for Kids scholarship campaign. Aaron's father, Eric Lawson, works in the aluminized department at Middletown Works.

James attends Madison Junior / Senior High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Top Twenty Award and the President's Award of Excellence. He is a former president and current vice president of student council, art club treasurer and a Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Ambassador. He is also active in Spanish club, the Youth Alive Christian club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. James volunteers at the Atrium Medial Center and the Animal Friends Humane Society. His father, James McGuire, works in the mobile maintenance department at Middletown Works.

Thomas attends Butler Area High School where he was named to "Who's Who Among American High School Students." He is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Academic Achievement Award. He is also a "Leaders of Tomorrow" finalist and a member of the hockey team. Thomas participates in Latin club, student council, marching band, jazz band and Junior Classical League. He is an altar server and volunteer for St. Vincent De Paul, Caring Angels, Global Links and Light of Life. His father, Raymond Mitch, works in the melt shop maintenance department at Butler Works.
- Jonathan Monnig, son of Robert and Catherine Monnig of Ironton, Ohio.
Jonathan attends Ironton High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the All Ohio Academic Award, the Principal's Award and the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League's All Academic Award. He is a first-team, all Ohio football and track athlete, as well as a member of the math club, Spanish club, weight lifting club and school newspaper staff. Jonathan performs volunteer work at Bellefonte Hospital and participates in Red Cross blood drives and Ironton cleanup day. He is also a Spanish tutor and grade school football coach. Jonathan's father, Robert Monnig, works in the finishing department at Ashland Works.

Kayla attends Freeport Area Senior High School where she is a National Merit Commended Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. She is captain of the Majorettes, a member of the newspaper staff and a Johns Hopkins Scholar. She is also a member of the Strongland Math League and the student council executive board. Kayla participates in quiz bowl, jazz band, symphonic band and wind ensemble, as well as school musicals. She is also a peer tutor, a Children's Hospital committee member and an Allegheny Valley Hospital volunteer. Kayla's father, Gregory Newman, works in the chemistry lab at Butler Works.
- Sarah Price, daughter of Larry Price and Lourdes Wise of Mansfield, Ohio – step daughter of Jane Price and Randy Wise.
Sarah attends Saint Peter's High School where she is an honor student and recipient of several scholar athlete awards. She is a member of the soccer, basketball, track and field and softball teams. Sarah is active in student council and has served as representative, treasurer and president of her class. She also participates in key club and travel club. Sarah is a volunteer helper for her local blood drive, as well as a youth soccer coach. She also helps organize a holiday gift wrapping event for children. Her father, Larry Price, works in the melt shop maintenance department at Mansfield Works.
- Logan Renwick, son of Jeffrey and Patricia Renwick of Butler, Pennsylvania.
Logan attends Butler Senior High School where he is a member of the National Honor Society and recipient of several scholar athlete awards. He is a three-time state medalist in track and field and a finalist for the "Sprint Leaders of Tomorrow" award. He is also captain of the basketball and track teams. Logan participates in student council, equations math club and the Stand Tall drug awareness program. He is also an altar server and Caring Angels volunteer, as well as a youth basketball and track coach. Logan's father, Jeffrey Renwick, works in the computer services department at Butler Works.
- Jessa Roeder, daughter of Todd Roeder of Huntingburg, Indiana and Beth Hawkins of Ferdinand, Indiana.
Jessa attends Forest Park High School where she is an honor student and member of the National Honor Society. She participates in Beta club, spirit club and art club, and is the manager of the girls' basketball team. Jessa is actively involved with Natural Helpers, Peers Educating Peers, Students Against Destructive Decisions and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a Bible school helper, as well as a Relay for Life, March of Dimes, Walk for Diabetes and nursing home volunteer. Jessa's father, Todd Roeder, works in the Pickling department at Rockport Works.
- Bridget Sullivan, daughter of Neal and Lorraine Sullivan of Liberty Township, Ohio.
Bridget attends Ursuline Academy where she is an honor student and member of the National Honor Society. She is also a nationally and internationally ranked Irish dancer. Bridget is a member of the school newspaper staff and a former co-editor of the features section. She participates in French club and is a graduate of the Impact 21 youth leadership program in Butler County, Ohio. She is also a school ambassador and writing center tutor. Bridget is a preschool aid and Project Linus volunteer. She also supports Relay for Life and Dance for the Cure. Bridget's father, Neal Sullivan, works in the purchasing department at Middletown Works.
- Robert Zanella, Jr., son of Robert and Alissa Zanella of Butler, Pennsylvania.
Robert attends Knoch High School where he was named to "Who's Who Among American High School Students." He is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Outstanding German Student Award and the Karen Shoop Award for character. Robert is a lettering member of the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams. He also participates in the math club. Robert is an altar server, lector and CCD teacher for his church. He is also a peer tutor, little league umpire and volunteer youth basketball referee. Robert's father, Robert Zanella, Sr., works in the specialty steel scheduling department at Butler Works.
In addition, Jarred Napier, son of Tony and Jeanetta Napier of Mansfield, Ohio, was originally selected to receive an AK Steel scholarship. Jarred subsequently accepted a full scholarship from an accredited university, making him ineligible to receive the funds that would have otherwise been provided by the AK Steel scholarship. Jarred attends Crestview High School where he is a scholar athlete and a member of the National Honor Society. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award, as well as a first team all-conference academic. Jarred is a member of the varsity soccer, track and field and academic challenge teams, and he is active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also participates in student council and Spanish club. Jarred performs volunteer work for the Salvation Army, Dayspring Retirement Home and the Domestic Violence Shelter. His father, Tony Napier, works in the melt shop maintenance department at Mansfield Works.
