The council acted after the attacks last week in Georgia and India, where the wife of one diplomat was seriously injured in a car bombing.
"The Security Council statement is an appropriate and necessary response to what happened last week when Israelis were targeted by terrorists," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "Particularly noteworthy are the Security Council's definition of terrorism as a threat to peace and security, and the call on UN member states to bring to justice those responsible for terrorist attacks."
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, noted that today's statement was the first in more than seven years regarding terror attacks on Israelis.
The Security Council statement, read to the media, "condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in New Delhi, India, aimed at Israel's diplomatic personnel, which resulted in injuries to diplomatic personnel and civilians, and the recent attempted terrorist attack in Tbilisi, Georgia."
The Council also "reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivations, whenever and by whomsoever committed."
