AJC Welcomes Senate Confirmation of Rabbi Saperstein
NEW YORK, Dec. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC welcomes the Senate's confirmation on Friday of Rabbi David Saperstein as Ambassador-at-large for Religious Freedom. President Obama announced the appointment in July.
Rabbi Saperstein will head the State Department's Office of International Religious Freedom. The office, created in 1998, monitors threats to religious freedom around the world, and develops and implements programs to enhance religious liberty.
Rabbi Saperstein served as the widely-admired Director and Chief Legal Counsel of the Union for Reform Judaism's Religious Action Center for over three decades.
AJC Executive Director David Harris called Rabbi Saperstein "an inspired choice for this vitally important post." Noting that AJC has worked closely with him on many public policy issues over the years, Harris said: "Rabbi Saperstein's proven commitment to religious liberty and his extensive experience in this field will stand him—and our country—in good stead, as he confronts the numerous, and rising, threats to the free exercise of religious freedom around the world."
