AJC Welcomes Romanian Rejection of Palestinian UDI Strategy

NEW YORK, July 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC welcomed Romania's announcement that it will not support a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) by the Palestinian leadership, underscoring the need to reach a two state solution via negotiations.

"With this welcome and courageous announcement, Romania joins Germany, The Netherlands and Italy in the growing bloc of European states opposed to this dangerous campaign by Palestinian leaders to trump negotiations with a unilateral gesture," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. Following a meeting in Bucharest with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc declared: "Romania believes in a two-state solution reached through negotiations, not through unilateral Palestinian actions."

Earlier this week, Netanyahu met with a high-level AJC delegation in Jerusalem, when he again emphasized Israel's commitment to reaching a final political settlement with the Palestinians through the negotiating process.
