AJC Urges UN Security Council Action After Revealing IAEA Report on Iran Nuclear Program
NEW YORK, June 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC is urging the UN Security Council to move expeditiously on adopting new, more stringent, sanctions against Iran after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) sharply criticized Tehran for lack of cooperation.
"Iran has routinely ignored the UN and IAEA, as it nears the goal of a nuclear-weapons capability," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "Iran's nuclear quest poses a clear and present danger to global security. The UN and individual countries must stand united on implementing actions in a determined effort to stop it."
The new IAEA report said that Iran's uranium stockpile, with further processing, could be used to make at least two nuclear bombs. The IAEA also pointed out that Iran has "not provided the necessary cooperation to permit the Agency to confirm that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities," the Washington Post reported.
"We were encouraged recently by U.S. Secretary of State Clinton's announcement that the UN Security Council now has enough votes to pass a fourth Iran sanctions resolution," said Harris. "The Council must act swiftly to let Tehran know in the clearest possible terms that the time for patience by the international community has at long last expired."
