"Warming up outdated and bizarre theories on genes and race is a highly combustible political brew," said Deidre Berger, Director of AJC's Berlin Office. "It is appalling that Thilo Sarrazin, a well-known public figure in Germany, could seriously promote ideas of genetic selection."
In his newly published book, "Deutschland schafft sich ab" (Germany does away with itself), Sarrazin suggests that educated women be paid large sums of money for child-bearing to improve the gene pool in Germany. In recent press interviews, Sarrazin has stated that Jews, Vietnamese and other minorities are genetically superior to Muslims.
Most commentators in Germany have denounced Sarrazin's genetic theories as discredited racial ideology, expressing concern that the discussion could promote far right-wing ideology and spur a populist movement. The book has garnered support from a growing group of critics of Germany's Muslim minority.
AJC Berlin called for an end to linking immigration, demography and genetics. "It is important that red lines be respected on discussion of important public issues, such as immigration, to prevent slanderous and hateful depictions of minorities," said Berger. "The best way to promote upward mobility is through access to education and the labor market."
AJC works closely with U.S. and German officials on democracy promotion programs such as "Hands Across the Campus," an educational initiative that encourages civic participation and an inclusive school environment.
AJC opened an office in Berlin in 1998, one of seven overseas posts of the global advocacy organization.
