AJC Miami on Canceled Balfour Declaration Event
MIAMI, Nov. 3, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC regrets that an event at the Jewish Museum of Florida to mark the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration was canceled last evening.
"We must take seriously the guidance of law enforcement authorities who advised that in the interests of public safety our educational event could not take place as scheduled. We hope to reschedule in the very near future," said Brian Siegal, Director of AJC Miami, and one of the scheduled speakers.
Law enforcement apprehended a Florida International University student after he allegedly issued a bomb threat. "We won't be intimidated by threats and will continue to stand for our principles and values," Siegal said.
Other speakers on the program were Israeli Consul General Lior Haiat, British Consul General David Prodger, Tel Aviv University Professor David Katz, Haifa University Professor Uri Ben Eliezer, and FIU Professor Eric Lob.
The historic Balfour Declaration recognizing the right of the Jewish people to establish a national home in Palestine was issued by the British Government on November 2, 1917.
The program was co-sponsored by Consulate General of Israel, British Consulate General, American Jewish Committee, Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, Global Jewish Studies Program, and Middle East Studies Program.
