AJC, Ecuador Jewish Community Sign Association Accord
QUITO, Ecuador, Nov. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- AJC has signed an association agreement with the Jewish Community of Ecuador.
"We are inspired by the many accomplishments of this small community over the last eight decades," said Dina Siegel Vann, Director of AJC's Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs "Ecuador has been a longstanding ally of both the United States and Israel. We hope that together with Ecuador's Jewish community we can usher in a new era in the trilateral relations based on common values and growing interests."
The association agreement was signed during the Jewish community's 80th anniversary celebration. President Lenin Moreno attended the event and spoke glowingly about the many Jewish contributions to his country. Ecuador was one of the few nations that opened its doors to Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. It also voted at the UN for the establishment of Israel.
"We're grateful that AJC has joined us for this important milestone in the history of our community," said Abraham Vigoda, President of the Jewish Community of Ecuador. "We look forward to working jointly, now as institutional partners, to ensure that Ecuadorian Jewry may continue to thrive."
This is AJC's 37th association agreement with Jewish communities around the world, the 14th with communities in Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
