"Archbishop Dolan's election is another significant step in furthering the positive and evolving relationship between Catholics and Jews in the United States," said Rabbi Gary Greenebaum, AJC's director of Interreligious and Intergroup Relations.
Appointed Archbishop of New York in 2009, Dolan has expanded his outreach to the Jewish community with a hand of friendship, and expressed special esteem for AJC.
"Since coming to New York, I have become more and more aware of the excellent and effective work that you do," said Dolan, addressing AJC's Board of Governors last month. He reaffirmed the centrality of Catholic-Jewish relations to his work.
In July, Dolan joined with AJC in Germany to view the Oberammergau Passion Play, and engage in conversations with the play's director and actors. Dolan commended the progress achieved in removing anti-Jewish elements from the play.
Over the past century AJC has spearheaded Catholic-Jewish relations, and has worked closely and cooperatively with the USCCB, the central address for Catholic interreligious outreach in the United States.
