AJC Applauds Canada's Condemnation of Iran's Anti-Israel Comments
NEW YORK, March 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC welcomed Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon's forthright condemnation of the latest threats against Israel made by Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
"Foreign Minister Cannon's statement is a welcome demonstration that Ahmadinejad's poisonous anti-Semitic rhetoric has no place in the conduct of international relations," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "We hope that other countries will follow Canada's sterling example of quickly, forcefully and unambiguously denouncing such vile comments."
Referring to Ahmadinejad, Minister Cannon stated: "His repeated threats against Israel and the Jewish people are deplorable and are outside the bounds of acceptable behavior for the leader of a member of the United Nations." Cannon also noted that such comments "add to the concerns of the international community over the threat Iran poses to international peace and security." He went on to say the government of Canada is also deeply concerned over Iran's "stifling of democracy" and its "blatant disregard of basic human rights."
